Each method starts from a base score and every answer applies a set of adjustments. Choosing a mobile service model pushes drive time up sharply and counties down; saying customers rarely travel far reverses that. Prioritising simple administration favours ZIP codes and counties while penalising custom boundaries, and admitting to basic data capability penalises drive time heavily, because drive-time territories are only as good as the tooling used to generate and reproduce them.
When the top two methods finish within eight points of each other the result switches to a hybrid recommendation, because at that margin the scoring is not distinguishing between them in a way you should act on. The advice then becomes to use one as the controlling boundary and the other to design or validate — never to leave two definitions with equal authority.
Methods that describe customer behaviour accurately are hard to administer, and methods that are easy to administer describe behaviour poorly. Drive-time areas match how people actually reach a business but are difficult to write into an agreement and change when the road network does. ZIP codes are trivial to list and audit but follow postal logistics, not demand. Most systems that scale end up accepting some behavioural inaccuracy in exchange for boundaries a franchisee can understand and a lawyer can describe.
The recommendation reflects your answers, not your market. Local geography routinely overrides it: a metro split by a river, a state with unusually large counties, or a city where ZIP boundaries cut through the densest demand can all make the second-ranked method the right one. And whichever you choose, the FDD, franchise agreement, exhibits, sales maps and internal records must all describe the same area — a method that is easy to administer is worth little if the documents disagree about what it covers.
The best method depends on the operating model, customer behavior, geography, required precision, available data, and how easily the boundary can be described and administered. Many systems use standard geographic units for the contractual territory and travel-time analysis to validate operational fit.
